Valarie Thomas is a passionate educator, historian, and curriculum designer with over 12 years of classroom experience. Named Teacher of the Year, she specializes in culturally responsive teaching and decolonized curriculum development. Her work centers Black voices, challenges traditional historical narratives, and empowers educators to bring truth and justice into the classroom.
Valarie has participated in prestigious fellowships and institutes, including work with the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, where she conducted archival research, developed educator resources, and supported the launch of a historical website. She has also contributed to projects focused on historic preservation, architectural research, and the archaeology of Black communities—work that grounds her teaching in place-based and community-centered history.
In addition to her work in education, Valarie brings years of experience as a social media strategist, using digital storytelling and technology to make history accessible, engaging, and transformative. This course is a reflection of her deep dedication to truth-telling, creative pedagogy, and the belief that education is a tool for liberation.
