Instructor Bio – Rhonda Harper
Rhonda Harper is a legendary surfer, educator, award-winning fashion designer, entrepreneur, and global changemaker. As the founder of Black Girls Surf, Harper has dedicated her life to carving space for Black athletes in competitive surfing. Her teaching career began at the Art Institute of California, Los Angeles, where she empowered aspiring designers through her course “How to Start a Clothing Line,” blending creativity, business, and innovation.
Today, she brings that same spirit of empowerment and leadership into the classroom through her Surfing 1A and Black Surf History courses. Harper’s curriculum connects athletic training with rich cultural narratives, highlighting the untold stories of Black surfers who shaped the sport. With decades of hands-on experience, international acclaim, and a passion for community building, Rhonda Harper challenges students to learn surfing and understand it as a movement—a tool for self-expression, resilience, and global impact.
