About Course

This 8 week writing class is designed for the new (and aspiring) authors!

Each week, we will break down eight key elements needed to explore and help you improve your writing. Through quizzes, writing excerpts, and welcoming critique groups, students will be able to further develop their skills in storytelling.

And at the end of this eight week course, you will have a deeper passion and understanding of the author process, along with your very own short story!

What Will You Learn?

  • To outline and organize a short story idea from start to finish.
  • How to write clear sentences that are easy to understand for your peers to provide constructive critique upon in peer focused discussion groups.
  • To recognize the difference between first, second, and third point of view when reading a story from completing the weekly homework assignments.
  • How to produce revisions of your previously submitted writing samples, to show your capabilities in editing and revising a short story.

Introduction and Next Steps
Hello Panthers! I'm K. McCoy, your instructor for Creative Writing (for Aspiring Authors). Over the next 8 weeks, we'll be exploring writing from an authors stance. Though before we get into it, let's break down this syllabus. That way, if you have any questions they can be addressed before attending class.

Purpose (and how to find yours)
We'll discuss the common goals behind this element (e.g., expression, information, persuasion), and when to apply them in your stories.

Coherence
We will look over the connecting points to a short story, and compare what methods we know for following the structure of a story.

Clarity
Now that we know how to look at the logic behind a story as a writer, let's break down ways to make sure your stories "make sense" from a reader's point of view.

Organization
This goes beyond outlining a story (whether you chose to use one or not, that is your business, lol) and knowing the purpose of the story. This goes beyond outlining a story (whether you chose to use one or not, that is your business, lol) and knowing the purpose of the story.

Creativity
On to the fun part! Let's delve into the many approaches we can think "outside the box" and fuel inspiration to tell stories in a creative way.

Revisions
This word is plural for a reason! We'll begin to explore why we re-write a story, whether to incorporate new facts, display a creative avenue, or to correct grammatical inconsistencies.

Critiques
Now that we've all gotten close, it's time to share. We'll cover a few beginner tips for balancing feedback on a story - as the one receiving and/or accepting the critique.

Reflection
And now that the class has come to a close, let's talk about it! Everyone will use the final week to write a letter to yourself, sharing the highs and lows from this creative writing course. Remember to use what you've learned this semester to be (you guessed it) creative in your approach!
