COS-F-101 introduces the foundational principles and techniques in cosmetology, designed to develop student confidence in essential hair, skin, and nail care practices. This course provides beginner-level hands-on experience and theory-based instruction, bridging real-world application with academic foundations in the beauty industry.

Course Content

5/19 – Sanitation and Infection Control
Sanitation is the #1 rule in any salon setting. This includes cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining a germ-free work area. You’ll learn about pathogens, universal precautions, how to properly clean tools, and understand the differences between cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing.

6/2 – Hair and Scalp Anatomy
Understanding the parts of the hair and scalp helps determine proper treatment. Learn about the cuticle, cortex, medulla, follicle, and sebaceous glands. Different hair types require different levels of care and product usage.

6/9 – Shampooing and Conditioning
Proper shampooing is the foundation of hair care. Learn techniques for draping, product application, and massage patterns that stimulate scalp health.

6/16 – Intro to Hairstyling (Blow Dry and Press)
Heat styling enhances the hair’s look but must be done properly to protect the hair shaft. Learn safe techniques, sectioning, and tension control.

6/23 – Intro to Skincare
Learn to identify different skin types: oily, dry, combination, and sensitive. Understand the importance of cleansing and moisturizing daily.

6/30 – Nail Care and Polish Application
Nail health starts with care. Learn about nail anatomy, how to properly file and shape nails, and polish with precision and safety.

7/7 – Professionalism and Portfolio Creation
Professionalism starts with showing up, being prepared, and presenting your work. Learn to create a digital portfolio, write captions, and reflect on growth.
